Resch Group Approach to LEAN

There are several approaches and flavors to a LEAN project, but it’s best to keep it straight-forward in order to quickly achieve value and to incrementally build upon that value. The following methodology summarizes the Resch Group approach to a LEAN improvement project:

 Pre-Work Activities (~1-2 weeks)

  • Identify key stakeholders
  • Identify in-scope processes
  • Establish process ownership
  • Develop stakeholder meeting schedule
  • Develop interview schedule
  • Initiate data requests
  • Train executive sponsorship on LEAN

 Current State Assessment (~2-4 weeks)

  • Train LEAN Champions and key project personnel
  • Fully understand business and technical requirements
  • Establish baseline metrics
  • Conduct Voice-of-the-Customer sessions
  • Conduct interviews and focus group sessions
  • Perform SIPOC and value stream mapping activities
  • Identify issues, pain-points and risks
  • Develop initial list of improvement ideas
 Future State Design (~2-4 weeks)

  • Continue training staff
  • Conduct deep-dive sessions around improvement ideas
    • Conduct brainstorming activities
    • Perform root-cause analysis via LEAN tools
    • Identify mistake proofing ideas
  • Enhance and streamline processes
  • Develop future state value stream maps
  • Solidify and prioritize improvement plans (Quick Hits and Projects)
  • Interact with existing PMOs for project support, as needed
  • Develop project charters and implementation plans for Quick Hits and Projects
Identification and Prioritization of Quick Hits and Projects
 Implementation (~4-8 weeks)
  • Implement project charters for Quick Hits and specified projects
  • Measure and analyze the progress of Quick Hits and projects
  • Refine the future state processes and operating models, as needed
  • Control the processes utilizing dashboard metrics
  • Establish the new and improved processes as the standard
